The stars of\u00a0Drive-Away Dolls<\/em><\/a> are welcoming a sillier era for queer storytelling.<\/p>\n

Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, the bonkers lesbian comedy follows the \u201cuninhibited free spirit\u201d Jamie (Margaret Qualley<\/a>) who, after cheating on her unhinged police officer girlfriend Sukie (Beanie Feldstein<\/a>), embarks on a wild road trip to Tallahassee with her \u201cdemure\u201d friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Along the way, Jamie tries to convince Marian to let loose, sexually, by having no-strings-attached hook-ups at lesbian bars, while a group of incompetent criminals hunt them down to take back a mysterious suitcase located in the back of their car.<\/p>\n

Although the film is set in 1999, it\u2019s devoid of stereotypical and tired queer tropes, from prejudice and discrimination to death and despair (how refreshing!).<\/p>\n

While those stories are arguably still important – It\u2019s A Sin<\/em><\/a> and Fellow Travelers<\/em><\/a>, for example – Feldstein tells GAY TIMES<\/em> that \u201cwe also need other movies that are fun and joyous and raunchy and sexy and playful\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo say that the queer experience is just coming out or difficult or painful is so narrow,\u201d she says. \u201cFor the three characters to be women and queer women at the centre of a Coen caper movie with Tricia Cooke adding her unique perspective and energy to it is really special, and I feel so lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress, known for her Golden Globe-nominated role in the queer teen classic Booksmart<\/em><\/a> (2019) and performance as Monica Lewinsky in American Crime Story<\/a>: Impeachment<\/em> (2021), lauded Qualley and Viswanathan for the – again, spoiler alert incoming! – love story between their characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is so amazing and beautiful and funny,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Drive-Away Dolls,\u00a0<\/em>described by Qualley as an homage to B-movies and ‘rambunctious, pulpy and wild’ by Viswanathan, is in UK and Irish cinemas from 15 March.<\/p>\n

The lesbian road-trip comedy boasts an ensemble supporting cast, with the main trio joined by Colman Domingo<\/a>, Pedro Pascal<\/a>, Billy Camp, Joey Slotnick, C.J. Wilson and Matt Damon. Miley Cyrus<\/a>, very famous singer, also stars in a cameo role.<\/p>\n
