He\u2019s attentive, answering questions while balancing an iPhone on his steering wheel. The Venezuelan reggaetonero exudes Scorpionic charisma as he details a breakthrough year, one that included a hit single, recording sessions in Miami with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/oscarcitomundo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscarcito<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and several magazine covers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 28-year-old Caracas native has been billed as \u201cthe first openly gay reggaetonero,\u201d though queer artists like Spain\u2019s Jedet and the late Puerto Rican trapero Kevin Fret were making their voice heard from the genre\u2019s margins years before La Cruz\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uproxx.com\/pop\/la-cruz-interview-gay-reggaeton\/\">regayt\u00f3n<\/a>\u201d popped off. Despite being far from being the first queer voice in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/remezcla.com\/music\/editorial-note-remezcla-will-no-longer-use-the-terms-urbano-musica-urbana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Movimiento<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, La Cruz is notable \u2013 perhaps ironically \u2013 for his stereotypically masc gay aesthetic and radio-friendly reggaeton sound. See viral single &#8216;Qu\u00edtate La Ropa&#8217; (&#8216;Take Off Your Clothes&#8217;), a classic top 40 popet\u00f3n complete with a booming dembow beat. The accompanying music video has male dancers in skin-tight jeans throw it back in two well-known sites of homoerotic desire: the boxing ring and the locker room. It\u2019s not groundbreaking music, but that\u2019s not the mould La Cruz is trying to break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of people told me the queer community wouldn\u2019t 100% accept my project because visually it\u2019s not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018queer\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d he says. \u201cThe reality is that inside of queer culture everything exists, and I represent a very specific part of it. My sound gears more Rauw Alejandro or Justin Quiles: melodic club reggaeton. It\u2019s a bit more mainstream. I want to give visibility to those boys grinding on each other and making out on the dancefloor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I want to give visibility to those boys grinding on each other and making out on the dancefloor<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t always viral smashes for La Cruz, though he never had trouble finding an audience. Singing since age 12, he was soon opening for more established acts like Reykon during Venezuelan tour dates. He moved to Spain with his former partner in 2015, and took part in popular talent competition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=k62jK3j3i9U&amp;themeRefresh=1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operaci\u00f3n Triunfo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 A glasses-clad ing\u00e9nue covering songs by Luis Fonsi and Beyonc\u00e9, he was the first to be eliminated. Transforming into an absolute stud, he dropped baile funk-tinged track <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AO6RIAON9q4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Nadie te va a querer&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (&#8216;Nobody Will Love You&#8217;) a year later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the initial outbreak of COVID and the global lockdown that followed, La Cruz released a string of well-received singles, from tracks in line with his current sound like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=psEUnPGrpqQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Efecto&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to tenderqueer reggaeton rom\u00e1ntico like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rJUp2XFhSWU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Fotos&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3jUuCbS95jg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Desnudx&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A lot of these would be compiled into his 2022 debut <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The title is a portmanteau of two tropical paradises: the Pacific archipelago, and the Venezuelan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> port capital city La Guaira where La Cruz was raised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/La-Cruz-Jonathan-Ivan.png\" \/><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/La-Cruz-Jonathan-Ivan-02.png\" \/><\/p><p><em><\/em><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Cruz\u2019s world turns reggaeton signifiers on their head. He wears big chains and puffers while riding around in Ducatis full of shirtless twunks. Boys in ass-fitting briefs and backwards caps play video games together while La Cruz holds court smoking joints. This subversion of El Movimiento\u2019s symbols, traditionally used to objectify video girls, and the way he dons the hyper-masculine aesthetic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/putthison.com\/straight-copying-how-gay-fashion-goes-mainstream\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making a comeback among gay men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stands in stark contrast with neoperreo. A goth queer-femme subgenre of El Movimiento, its wide umbrella encompasses artists like Ms Nina, Isabella Lovestory, Yajaira La Beyaca, Tomasa Del Real, and other experimental alt-reggaetonerxs whose work has made ripples from margin to center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved Ivy Queen and Arc\u00e1ngel as a kid; Don Omar too \u2013\u00a0everyone from the old school,\u201d he says of his early inspirations. \u201cIvy Queen really broke ground as a woman in the genre. Don Omar gave visibility to gay culture within reggaeton on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BIe6eLhNkmI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Mu\u00f1ecas de Porcelana\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We all see what\u2019s happening now, but people who were paying attention in the moment took note: nobody really talked about it because it was another time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every reggaetonerx has their sonic signature. Most opt to shout out their own name, like Pok\u00e9mon (here\u2019s looking at you, Bad Bunny). Others shout out their homelands. Early songs see La Cruz opt for the latter: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venezuela en la fucking casa.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He last visited last December after five years away. Including La Cruz, most of Venezuela\u2019s most prominent acts come from the societal margin. Superstar act Arca is set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.cusica.com\/2024\/01\/30\/arca-se-presentara-el-16-de-marzo-en-venezuela\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perform in Caracas this month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the first time since her transition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/djbabatr\/?hl=en\">DJ Babatr<\/a>, the Afro-Venezuelan founder of electronic genre raptor house who grew up in the western Caracas Propatria neighbourhood, was only recently given his flowers. La Cruz\u2019s positionality as an out gay man is a notable continuation, especially when Venezuelan society at large seemingly hasn\u2019t caught up<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OWhfNYITd2I?si=smHI6l0Mpr6ceRWE\" width=\"695\" height=\"436\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, gay influencer Marcos Caraballo, who posed as a corset-clad angel in front of Maracaibo\u2019s Bas\u00edlica de La Chiquinquir\u00e1, and his collaborator Nerio Bello Negr\u00f3n <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/efectococuyo.com\/la-humanidad\/joven-que-se-vistio-de-angel-y-se-hizo-fotos-frente-a-basilica-en-maracaibo-no-podra-salir-del-pais\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were arrested in Maracaibo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for creating \u201cimages that were perturbing to society.\u201d The populist chavista regime has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/international\/2023-07-26\/venezuelas-regime-embraces-ultraconservative-religious-movements.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently embraced religious conservatism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clashing with LGBTQIA+ activists. Still, the younger generation keeps it pushing: local parties like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/estajevi\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Est\u00e1 Jevi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe I was in a space like that in Venezuela,\u201d La Cruz gushes \u2013 cultivate safe spaces in nightlife, and reflect the newer generation\u2019s alignment with where the culture is globally and nationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHomophobia is something that we have to continue to fight ourselves so we can push our rights forward and maintain \u2013 if not further \u2013 our progress,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I was in Caracas, I noticed a lot of the people from our generation are very conscious about what the people want. I\u2019ve met a lot of Venezuelans who have changed my vision about my country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homophobia is something that we have to continue to fight ourselves so we can push our rights forward\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Cruz\u2019s enthusiasm is matched by his optimism for the future. With a new album on the way, one with a concept tying it together rather than just a collection of songs, he\u2019s vying to keep growing as an artist. Born under the sign of sex, death, and radical transformation, La Cruz is open to wherever his path might lead \u2014 and wants to look hot doing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe change all the time,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is the phase of my life where I make these songs, but I want to experiment with other sounds and keep enjoying the process. I\u2019m in constant flux, baby. La gente est\u00e1 apoyando mi proyecto, y estoy feliz. La verdad es que me fui con expectativas normales, y cuando llegu\u00e9 fue como <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estuve grabando con <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/oscarcitomundo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscarcito<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, un cantante venezolano y compositor que ha trabajado con Jennifer L\u00f3pez y Marc Anthony. Fue la \u00fanica persona con la que hice sesi\u00f3n, pero este a\u00f1o regreso a Miami. Estoy pensando si es definitivo o no, pero voy a estar trabajando full all\u00ed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00bfC\u00f3mo has recibido toda esta atenci\u00f3n positiva hacia el proyecto?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S\u00faper bien, la verdad. Al principio uno piensa que es complicado decirle al mundo tanto y que va dirigido a un chico. A veces es bien complejo, pero yo disfrut\u00e9 el proceso con mis amigos y mis productores en el estudio creando. Nos centramos m\u00e1s en eso que en otra cosa, y creo que la gente est\u00e1 recibiendo eso. Nos la pasamos bien y hacemos buena m\u00fasica, que al final es lo que cuenta: el arte.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>He estado pensando mucho en c\u00f3mo se ha transformado El Movimiento. Cuando pienso en el reggaet\u00f3n queer, lo que me llega a la mente es el neoperreo: artistas como Isabella Lovestory, Villano Antillano, Tomasa Del Real, y Arca. \u00bfTe localizas en ese legado de alguna manera?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yo creo que al final cada quien interpreta lo que vive a su forma. Muchas personas de mi entorno me dec\u00edan que ser\u00eda complicado que [la comunidad queer] aceptara al 100% el proyecto porque no es visualmente \u201ctan queer\u201d. En realidad dentro de la cultura queer hay de todo, y yo represento una parte espec\u00edfica. Creo que mis l\u00edneas de sonido van un poco m\u00e1s al reggaeton de Rauw Alejandro o Justin Quiles. Me encanta Villana; consumo su m\u00fasica much\u00edsimo. Mi l\u00ednea de reggaeton se va un poco m\u00e1s a la mel\u00f3dica y a las vivencias de lo que pasa en la discoteca. Es un poco lo mainstream. Siempre intento romantizar las historias y llevarlas para eso. En realidad quiero seguir manteni\u00e9ndome en una l\u00ednea bien coherente. Al fin y al cabo somos personas cambiantes, vamos evolucionando y creo que en esta etapa de mi vida estoy haciendo estas canciones. Me est\u00e1n encantando, pero m\u00e1s adelante quiero experimentar otros sonidos, otras movidas. Creo que es parte tambi\u00e9n de disfrutar el proceso.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00a1Me encanta que quieras experimentar! Justo te veo tem\u00e1ticamente alternativo de alguna manera \u2014 en el reggaeton, amor entre chicos en la discoteca todav\u00eda no se ve tanto \u2014 pero s\u00f3nicamente tienes mucho m\u00e1s en com\u00fan con lo mainstream del g\u00e9nero.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tal vez en este momento no lo estoy haciendo [alternativo], pero va a llegar un momento en que me va a encantar. Le quiero poder dar visibilidad a cosas que no [la han tenido], a lo que pas\u00f3 en una discoteca entre dos chicos que se gustan tal vez y est\u00e1n bailando y<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morre\u00e1ndose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R7IzQBw03Lo?si=OPFw_PnwDNZgIAiG\" width=\"695\" height=\"436\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00bfCreciste escuchando reggaeton?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Me encantaba Ivy Queen, y Arc\u00e1ngel desde muy ni\u00f1o. Don Omar tambi\u00e9n, un mont\u00f3n. Obviamente todos los de la vieja escuela, sabe? Ivy Queen marc\u00f3 algo con el g\u00e9nero femenino en la industria. Don Omar fue uno de los que dio visibilidad a la cultura homosexual dentro del g\u00e9nero. Todos vemos lo que est\u00e1 pasando ahora, pero hay gente que s\u00ed prest\u00f3 atenci\u00f3n en su momento y si vio que estaba pasando algo. Nadie lo notaba porque eran otros tiempos, sabes \u2014 &#8220;Mu\u00f1ecas de Porcelana&#8221;, por ejemplo. Ellos eran mis artistas referentes. Obviamente el reggaet\u00f3n era como para un momento puntual, pero tambi\u00e9n consumo mucho pop. Me encanta la m\u00fasica alternativa. Arca no la conozco tanto, pero Villana la consumo full.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Yo menciono full a Arca porque, como venezolano no binario, ella es Dios. \u00bfViste que pronto toca en Caracas en Cusica?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Me encantar\u00eda abrir ese show. Ser\u00eda un sue\u00f1o para m\u00ed. La \u00faltima vez que estuve en Venezuela fue en diciembre del a\u00f1o pasado. Estuve dando un concierto. Ah\u00ed la gente es incre\u00edble conmigo y estoy muy agradecido.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Me pone muy feliz o\u00edrlo. He estado pensando mucho en la sociedad venezolana espec\u00edficamente, y c\u00f3mo sigue todav\u00eda la huevonada homof\u00f3bica \u2014 pienso espec\u00edficamente en la situaci\u00f3n de <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/efectococuyo.com\/la-humanidad\/joven-que-se-vistio-de-angel-y-se-hizo-fotos-frente-a-basilica-en-maracaibo-no-podra-salir-del-pais\/\"><b>&#8220;el \u00e1ngel maracucho&#8221;<\/b><\/a><b> Marcos Caraballo y Nerio Bello Negr\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Si te soy sincero, yo que he estado viajando y conociendo diferentes culturas y diferentes p\u00fablicos, la homofobia es algo que tenemos que luchar nosotros mismos para seguir consiguiendo nuestros derechos, parar la homofobia, y mantener el punto en el que estamos o ir a mejor. Siempre hay micro-retrocesos que nos llevan a la mierda. Yo que estuve en Caracas, me di cuenta que hay una gran parte de la juventud que es consciente de los derechos y que es lo que quiere la gente. Mientras no le hagas da\u00f1o a nadie, mientras respetes a la persona que tienes al lado y seas feliz, eso es lo que vale. He conocido mucha gente en Venezuela que me ha cambiado la visi\u00f3n de mi pa\u00eds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mis panas que est\u00e1n all\u00e1 y los de afuera que han visitado, muchos por primera vez en a\u00f1os, me han contado de la escena queer underground. La fiesta <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/estajevi\/?hl=en\"><b>Est\u00e1 Jevi<\/b><\/a><b>, por una.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby, si. Incre\u00edble. El d\u00eda de mi concierto, no me cre\u00eda que estaba en Venezuela. Muy bonito. S\u00e9 que la celebraci\u00f3n de Arca va a ser una cosa que te mueres.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Me interesa tambi\u00e9n la dualidad de que los artistas venezolanos que m\u00e1s nos est\u00e1n poniendo en alto a nivel global \u2014 pienso en Arca, en ti, en DJ Babatr \u2014 son figuras que quiz\u00e1 sean rechazados por la sociedad general all\u00e1.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lo he pensado mucho tambi\u00e9n, y es porque creo que desafortunadamente venimos de unos tiempos en donde el venezolano est\u00e1 desvalorizando su propio talento, la gente de su tierra. &#8220;A ese lo conocen en su casa&#8221; \u2014 \u00bfcu\u00e1ntas veces has escuchado esa? Cuando estaba empezando en Venezuela todo el mundo era &#8220;este lo est\u00e1n escuchando en su casa, este es un loco&#8221;. A veces los locos los llegan a conseguir; desafortunadamente tienes que irte de tu tierra para poder conseguirlo. Creo que despu\u00e9s del COVID, con todo el movimiento musical que ha habido globalmente, Venezuela ha dado un paso en ese sentido. Se acepta y consume un poco m\u00e1s el contenido de la gente, y se le ha dado m\u00e1s valor al arte. Creo que el venezolano de cierta manera es muy incr\u00e9dulo con sus artistas, pero es como todo: hay gente que es as\u00ed y hay gente que es maravillosa.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u00bfQu\u00e9 me cuentas del disco que viene este a\u00f1o? \u00bfC\u00f3mo has crecido desde <\/b><b><i>Hawaira<\/i><\/b><b>?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estoy intentando conseguir temas bien personales. Hice una gira de seis fechas el a\u00f1o pasado en Latinoam\u00e9rica y Am\u00e9rica d\u00e1ndolo todo, y sinceramente yo me sent\u00eda conectado con las canciones al 100%. Pienso que si las canciones las hago con m\u00e1s de mi realidad, voy a disfrutar el doble cuando haga la gira el a\u00f1o que viene cuando tenga el \u00e1lbum listo.
