In an open letter and video posted on 27 October<\/a>, the Adelaide United player shares that he is gay.<\/p>\n The midfielder says he has been \u201chiding who I truly am\u201d but is \u201cfinally comfortable\u201d to speak out about his sexuality.<\/p>\n “There’s something personal that I need to share with everyone. I am a footballer and I am gay,” he explains in the clip shared to the team\u2019s social media.<\/p>\n The 21-year-old adds that he has been trying to live a \u201cdouble life\u201d but that enough is enough<\/a>.<\/p>\n In a letter to fans, Cavallo shares that he \u201ccouldn\u2019t be happier\u201d to come out.<\/p>\n “It’s been a journey to get to this point in my life, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come out,” he writes.<\/p>\n “I have been fighting my sexuality for six years now and I’m glad I can put that to rest.<\/p>\n “Growing up I always felt the need to hide myself because I was ashamed – ashamed I would never be able to do what I loved and be gay.”<\/p>\n https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdelaideUnited\/status\/1453173351396958208?s=20<\/a><\/p>\n He continues: “Growing up being gay and playing football were just two worlds that hadn’t crossed paths before.”<\/p>\n The footballer reveals that he knows of \u201cother players living in silence\u201d and states that he was afraid to come out<\/a> because of the implications it could have on his career.<\/p>\n “I want to help change this,” he explains. “I want to show that everyone is welcome in the game of football and deserves the right to be their authentic self.<\/p>\n “It is astonishing to know that there are currently no gay professional footballers who are out and actively playing, not only in Australia, but around the world.
