{"id":1451401,"date":"2025-09-23T12:18:48","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T11:18:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/?p=1451401"},"modified":"2025-09-23T12:18:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T11:18:48","slug":"russell-tovey-banned-from-grindr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/culture\/russell-tovey-banned-from-grindr\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s why Russell Tovey is banned from Grindr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pro-tip: if you see Russell Tovey on Grindr, it\u2019s not him \u2014 the actor reveals he\u2019s been banned from the gay dating app!<\/p>\n<p>This week, the star appeared on the latest episode of <em>Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen<\/em> alongside Tom Blyth to promote their gay romantic drama <em>Plainclothes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to opening up about his favourite on-screen kiss \u2014 spoiler alert: it\u2019s with his <em>Looking<\/em> co-star Jonathan Groff! \u2014 Tovey revealed that he\u2019s not currently on any dating apps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he responded to a viewer\u2019s question about his app history.<\/p>\n<p>When Cohen asked if Tovey was on Grindr, he replied with another swift \u201cno,\u201d before adding: \u201cI tried it for a bit, but\u2026 it was a bit weird. I actually got barred from it for impersonating myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Cohen shared that the same thing had happened to him, Tovey continued: \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t believe me. As mentioned, he currently stars alongside Blyth in <em>Plainclothes<\/em>, which follows a working-class undercover officer tasked with trapping and apprehending gay men. Lucas (Blyth), however, falls for his target, Andrew (Tovey).<\/p>\n<p><em>Plainclothes<\/em>, which received praise from critics \u2014 particularly for the duo\u2019s performances \u2014 is out now in the U.S. and will be released in the UK on 3 October.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Tovey also appeared as Deputy Assistant Commissioner Brian Paddick in the Disney+ crime miniseries <em>Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Tovey reprised his role as Guy in BBC Three\u2019s surreal comedy series <em>Juice<\/em>, created by and starring Mawaan Rizwan as Jamma, a young gay man navigating commitment issues in his relationship and attention issues within his family.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more: Tovey will next star as the lead in Russell T Davies\u2019 sci-fi miniseries <em>The War Between the Land and the Sea<\/em>, set in the Whoniverse.
