{"id":1449515,"date":"2025-09-01T15:32:04","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T14:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/?p=1449515"},"modified":"2025-09-02T17:03:44","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T16:03:44","slug":"colman-domingo-shuts-down-backlash-to-drag-character-sabrina-carpenter-tears-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/drag\/colman-domingo-shuts-down-backlash-to-drag-character-sabrina-carpenter-tears-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Colman Domingo shuts down backlash over drag character in Sabrina Carpenter&#8217;s video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colman Domingo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/music\/sabrina-carpenter-video-tears-colman-domingo-drag-rocky-horror\/\">iconic drag turn in Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s new music video<\/a> has the usual anti-LGBTQIA+ crowd fuming \u2013 and he couldn\u2019t care less.<\/p>\n<p>On 29 August, Carpenter unleashed full-blown queer mayhem with the music video for her glittering disco anthem \u2018Tears\u2019, serving up homages to various horror classics \u2013 most notably <em>The Rocky Horror Picture Show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Playing Susan Sarandon\u2019s heroine Janet, the Grammy winner arrives at a sinister house in the middle of nowhere, where she\u2019s welcomed by Domingo\u2019s deliciously camp Dr. Frank-N-Furter and a swarm of eccentric queer misfits.<\/p>\n<p>While fans and critics largely showered the video with overwhelming acclaim, it was met with contempt from the conservative, heteronormative brigade that can\u2019t seem to comprehend fun (so shocking!).<\/p>\n<p>One disgruntled viewer on Twitter\/X threw a strop, dismissing Domingo\u2019s drag makeover as \u201cbulls**t\u201d. Domingo, however, brushed it off with peak nonchalance: \u201cCalm down brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a character. Like all the characters I play,\u201d the Oscar responded. \u201cEnjoy the video and the fun that it possesses. Dance it out! It ain\u2019t that deep.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s a character. Like all the characters I play.
