Here are the queer running clubs to know. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VOLTAROL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PHOTOGRAPHY <strong>JADE SMITH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Emma_GayTimes_Volterol_Jade_SmithDSCF4155.jpg\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While social media has found new ways to connect humans across the globe, paradoxically, it seems like loneliness is the defining feeling of our times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2023\/nov\/16\/who-declares-loneliness-a-global-public-health-concern\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the World Health Organisation declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> loneliness a \u2018global public health concern\u2019 which can be as harmful for people\u2019s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the UK, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/community-life-survey-202324-annual-publication\/community-life-survey-202324-loneliness-and-support-networks--2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to official statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 7% of people report feeling lonely often or always. This figure increases sharply for those who are gay and lesbian (12%) and bisexual (16%), as well as for those whose gender identity is different from their sex registered at birth (19%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the isolation which so many people face in their day-to-day, folks have been lacing up their running shoes: data from Strava app and survey respondents, indicates a 59% increase in running club participation in 2024, with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.strava.com\/articles\/strava-releases-annual-year-in-sport-trend\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 58% of <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey respondents saying that fitness groups helped them make new friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running groups offer an opportunity to bring people together, fostering communities based around a shared love of running and movement as an antidote to isolation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Georgie_GayTimes_Volterol_Jade_SmithDSCF3948-scaled.jpg\" \/><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Emmac_GayTimes_Volterol_Jade_SmithDSCF4066-scaled.jpg\" \/><\/p><p><em><\/em><\/p><h3><b>The importance of queer-focused running groups<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, queer and trans folks might be less likely to seek out these groups. While loneliness is a pressing issue in the communit<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pridesports.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Non-binary.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y, research by the National LGBT Partnership in 2016 found that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 56% of LGBT women, 55% of LGBT men, and 64% of non-binary LGBT folks were not active enough to maintain good health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reasons for this may be due to the perceived barriers to access, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scispace.com\/pdf\/lambeth-lgbt-matters-the-needs-and-experiences-of-lesbians-1iwp7qwfzx.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research suggesting that queer and trans people might not feel like existing exercise facilities are inclusive spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat this, several LGBTQIA+ specific running collectives have emerged \u2013 creating opportunities for queer and trans people to come together, move their bodies and help combat loneliness by finding community and new friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pridesports.org.uk\/sport\/running\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dotted across the UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these clubs are available in so many different cities: from Cardiff Foxes in Wales to Edinburgh Frontrunners in Scotland. Each group offers a space for all identities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella to run and train without fear of homophobia and transphobia, and to meet people with similar outlooks and perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more details on queer running clubs in your area, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pridesports.org.uk\/sport\/running\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consult Pride Sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GAYTIMES-VOLTAROL-JADESMITH-FILM-6.jpg\" \/><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GAYTIMES-VOLTAROL-JADESMITH-FILM-5.jpg\" \/><\/p><p><em><\/em><\/p><h3><b>Queer running groups as a space for community connection<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In London, a vibrant community has developed at Queer Running Club, a group which is hosted on the queer-focused, fitness booking platform BEND Movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BEND is co-founded by Georgie Okell, a fitness trainer whose work focuses on trans and queer inclusion. For Georgie, their running journey began as a \u201ccoping mechanism\u201d and a way to improve their mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Emma <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirk-Odunubi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a coach and running analyst for whom running has been a major source of self-discovery. Following the death of her father, she explains that throwing herself into running \u201csaved\u201d her and provided an antidote to the grief she was dealing with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years, she\u2019s turned to the sport as a way of exploring queerness. \u201cI only came out 4 or 5 years ago.
