Let’s unpack the controversies, the nuance and the fantasies of gay for pay porn.

Ever come across the term “gay for pay”? No? Well, let me explain a little bit about what it is, why it’s controversial, reasons behind why someone straight might participate in gay porn and if it’s ever okay to spend your money and time on.

“Gay for pay” refers to straight porn actors and sex workers who participate in same-sex sex scenes and acts in exchange for money. Usually, more money than they would receive doing straight sex scenes or acts within mixed sex pairings.

Some will disclose they are straight, others won’t.

For some, straightness is part of the sex appeal, for others it’s a violation of the queer experience. This creates a nuanced and multifaceted controversy that surrounds the gay for pay industry at large. Is it ethical, or exploitative? Does it appropriate queer culture, or provide a service?

Why is gay for pay controversial?

Several clashing and interconnected issues make gay for pay a controversial topic. From the allure of a better pay day and the fetishisation of straightness, to the weaponisation of gay for pay porn in anti-LGBTQIA+ arguments, it makes it thorny and divisive.

The legacy of Sean Cody, ‘straight men’ porn and subverting machismo

Way back in September, 2001, a website for gay porn popped up. The site, known as Sean Cody, was filled with solo, group and hardcore porn showing seemingly straight-coded men. They were young, muscly, twunk-ish looking jocks that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the football field.

The all-American boy, straightness and the “I’ve never done this before” trope were a shoo-in. The site rose in popularity, with many fresh-faced young men becoming household names. There was Brandon – real name Jefferey – for example, who peaked in popularity around 2015.

While Brandon/Jeff has openly discussed his no-label approach to his sexuality, his peer Taylor – real name Justin Matthews – has long been open about his straight identity.

In an interview with the Shut Up Evan newsletter in 2023, Taylor/Justin opens up about being scouted at 17 (this seems to be a commonality shared between the stars, as Brandon/Jeff was scouted at just 19 while waiting tables at Arbee’s) and his career as a gay for pay porn performer.

Like Brandon/Jeff, Taylor/Justin came from a humble background. At the time they were both recruited, they were both working hospitality jobs, looking at ways to make more money. When they were both approached, they both felt like getting paid for doing something they were doing at home for free (i.e. jacking off) was a pretty sweet deal.

Speaking on the gay for pay aspect of his work, Taylor/Justin said that he originally had thought, ‘absolutely not,’ but soon changed his mind.

“I was thinking about the dollar signs. I was born into poverty, so I was just thinking, ‘How can I get my mom out of poverty? What can I do?'” he said.

According to various posts on forums like Reddit and Quora, gay sex scenes pay better than straight-seeming scenes with women. Though it’s hard to know, exactly, as there isn’t necessarily a credible log of who gets paid what for what, just knocking about. However, some reports of it do exist in the digital archives of Mic Magazine, for example.

For straight men (and I do not include bi, heteroflexible, homoromantic or any other forms of sexual orientations within that umbrella), more money seems to be the main motivator for participation.

The appeal of straight men in gay porn is still popular today, as according to the 2025 PornHub Pride Report, it is one of the most commonly viewed categories for 18-24 year olds.

It is also the most popular category of porn in places like Poland, a country notorious for its anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment, and the most-viewed gay categories across Colorado, Louisiana and Iowa. Colorado is currently facing a threat to its ban on conversion camps; Louisiana recently voted against discrimination rights for LGBTQIA+ citizens; and Iowa’s new law bans updates to gender markers on birth certificates.

It might be unreasonable to assume that this interest in straight porn is one of two things, a subversion of comp-heterosexuality and machismo, and a means to explore desire while combatting internalised homophobia.

Subversion of this kind is seen in kink all the time – particularly kinks related to sportswear or scally-lads. It can be freeing, liberating and affirming when explored consensually and mindfully.

However, for those with internalised homophobia, it can be about exploring same-sex desire without feeling “gay”. In a VICE report on scally lads published in 2014 (read with caution – it’s a product of its time) the author comments on one profile, which states “I hate those fucking skinny jeans-wearing, glitter-faced queens. I like guys to be guys, and I might be a bottom, but I ain’t no sub-bitch either.” That the “obsession with heterosexuality” and “fear of effeminancy” is extreme enough to sound, well, homophobic.

Recently, straight gay-for-pay porn actor Andy Lee stated in an episode of the All Out podcast with John Dean – which tackled reasons behind the homo-erotic nature of laddish culture and its appeal to the gay community – that he owed his lifestyle to his gay fans.

“They [fans] wanted to see more lads from the streets. Bring more of my real friends in, not porn stars. They wanted a lot more of that,” said Lee, whose OnlyFans is built on catering to the straight-loving gay-gaze, filled with laddish groups of straight men pushing their sexual boundaries. When asked by Dean why he does so well, he replied that, from his experience, it comes down to three main things.

“From speaking with a lot of gay men,” he said, “a lot of them had that friend in school – their best mate, someone that related to them growing up that they could never have.”

He continued to explain that, from his understanding, the tension between the forbidden fruit, the fantasy of being able to touch and have sex with someone straight and the realism of the type of machismo he has is what holds the straight male porn fantasy together, in the same way that some straight men might enjoy being turned away by two sapphic women.

“People like what’s not the norm,” he continued.

Money, marginalisation and misrepresentation

The second thread that pulls on a controversial string is the idea that gay roles, in cinema and in porn, should be fulfilled by gay men. And, that by straight men taking these roles, they take money away from gay men, who are marginalised. This causes both misrepresentation and it’s an undeniable sting. The fact that a straight man can make money from something that is socially taboo’d globally can feel like a slap in the face.

But as we’ve covered with the straight man porn, it’s not always as simple as playing into a mixed sex fantasy that is representational of gay identity. Some people aren’t into it.

“There are some people who get very offended by the fact that a heterosexual man is engaging in gay sex with other men with penises” says Rhys, 31. “They feel that they’ve been cheated or the fantasy is broken for them and they can’t engage with it anymore. I think that’s really interesting because, for me, I always remember that all porn is a fantasy to a degree.”

Rhys explains that for him, labels are having less and less importance, following a UK-wide trend of many millennial and Gen-Z folks feeling fatigued by self-identification.

So, why do porn actors and OnlyFans creators go in for gay-for-pay?

Alexia Woods, 23, from London is an OnlyFans creator who frequently does gay-for-pay videos, but identifies as straight.

“For me, it’s always been for the money and a case of demand from my fans. I put it off for a while as I found it to be pretty awkward in the beginning, but I think it was just a case of building confidence to do the scenes. I actually mainly work with girls I’m close friends with now,” she tells Gay Times.

Woods explains that as far as her attitude on gay for pay, it is exactly that – only performative. “The majority of women in the industry are straight, but know that filming girl/girl collabs is the best way forward.”

She notes that, for a lot of her straight male fans, they like the idea that she’s straight and doing girl-on-girl content, as it gives it an edge of exclusivity, which also means you can mark up the price.

“In regards to sexuality aligning with the sex acts they perform, I’d personally say no. The part I love about this industry is the freedom and creative thinking it allows you. You can create whatever content you want, and that includes content that doesn’t align with their sexuality.”

Weaponisation of LGBTQIA+ identity

The last and final bone of contention comes from the weaponisation of gay for pay porn, which has historically been cocked to the bow of conservatism as ‘proof’ that orientation is a choice. What this fails to take into consideration is both romantic love and the physical mechanism of arousal.

The body can become aroused randomly, when we are asleep, through touch and stimulation and by visual, auditory and textural senses.

There are nuances to attraction and arousal, too. It may, for example, not be the fact that two men are giving one another oral sex that’s the turn-on; it could be the context of their environment, or, as we’ve seen, the performance of their gender and sexuality.

“Everything is about sex, except for sex. Sex is about power,” Oscar Wilde famously wrote, and it seems that with gay for pay porn, it is the power of the fantasy of straight men that people are buying into.

WORDS KATIE BASKERVILLE

Okay you horny lot, listen up! PronHub have released their Gay Pride insights for 2025, and we need to talk about them – STAT.

According to the report, published in June, we’ve been very, very busy across the UK in search of our wildest fantasies. Here’s a breakdown of everything we know about the top gay sex trends of 2025.

The young’uns are horny as fuck for… the military?

While ;orn is enjoyed across a spectrum of ages, the 18-24s certainly take the award for most horny demographic, making up a whopping 27% of the viewership. That’s over a quarter, followed by 25-34 year olds (20%).

And while the over 65s made up a small portion of gay porn viewership (11%), they were the most likely demographic to watch it. Additionally, they share a certain proclivity with the 18-24 year olds. Both over-65s and 18-24s enjoyed the military category +92% and +68% more, respectively, than other age groups.

Interestingly, the younger age group were most turned on by tattooed men (+132%) and straight guys (+69%) more than any other age group, which could suggest a desire for dominant figures, rules, punishments or subverting those experiences to push back against authority and compulsory heterosexuality. But that’s just, like, my opinion.

Pornhub

Who were we tuning into watch the most?

There’s no denying it, twinks rule the roost when it comes to the most visited category on the site. And it seems that no two countries across Europe are the same when it comes to category preferences. And breaking it down by UK region, we begin to see a more colourful picture of how we like to get down.

While Londoners are loving uncut porn, Scotland are championing cartoons. Meanwhile, the North West are searching for blowjobs on mass and South East are enjoying solo videos. It just goes to show that we’re a little different in our tastes when we zoom in a little more.

The UK, Germany and Italy are obsessed with these porn stars

One thing’s for sure, the UK, Germany and Italy have a surprising crossover with their most viewed pornstars. Malik Delgaty, Joe Mills, Zane Walker (who identifies as straight), Cade Maddox, Jake Preston, and Rhyheim Shabazz made it into the top ten list for each country.

Who in the UK is watching the most porn?

Okay, okay. Here’s the tea. The South East take the biscuit for the most viewed porn compared to the national average (+77%). Next were Northern Ireland (+38%), the North West (+24%) and Yorkshire and Humber (+20%). Meanwhile, London trailed behind the national average by 6%, as well as the North East by 2%.

Safe to say that something in the South East is making people horny AF.

Ladies and gentlemen, the tops and bottoms of the week reveal themselves.

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

Top, bottom, vers – these terms get banded about frequently in queer culture, particularly in the gay community. While tops are generally considered to be the more dominant partner and bottoms the submissive, the truth is there’s a lot more to these dynamics than these simple names suggest. There are power bottoms, femme tops, switches and more.

While some folks don’t like to label their sex this way, as it can be reductive and restricting, there’s no denying that others love the surety labels like these can bring to their identity.

And listen, everyone loves to know who’s doing what in the bedroom, and declaring your sexual dynamic is one way to let fellow queer folks know what you’re into.

So, without further ado, let’s meet the people shouting it from the rooftops!

Bowen Yang (bottom)

On Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang revealed he was a bottom during a skit with that week’s host, Simu Lu. Later, in a video with BuzzFeed, Yang read out thiiiiirsty tweets and proudly declared his “spit-bottom” status.

“I guess I’m here to declare mussy. With an mhmhm.”

Lil Nas X (power bottom)

In a heated exchange with right-wing bigots on Twitter/X following Lil Nas X’s BET Awards performance, where he kissed two men on stage, he proudly declared his power bottom status.

“Next time, I’ll just fuck the guy on stage,” he tweeted. Tongue in cheek? You decide.

Haaz Sleiman (bottom)

Haaz Sleiman had us gagged when he announced he was a “total bottom”.

In a Queerty report, Sleiman was clear that he didn’t subscribe to the tired tropes of bottoming = bad.

“We say, ‘Tops are better.’ And then we eye roll when we hear that someone is a bottom,” he said. “We hear that men are more worthy than women, and men are the center of the world. It is the same when it comes to the dynamic between bottoms and tops. It is OK if he is f*cking another man but it’s not if he is being f*cked by another man. I don’t accept this. This is not the world I want to live in.”

Ryan O’Connell (bottom)

When Ryan O’Connell spoke about his intentions for his stand out Netflix show Special based on his memoir of the same name, he said he wanted to make something really disabled, gay and horny.

We also learned that O’Connell isn’t just a bottom, but a power bottom. Kudos!

David Archuleta (top)

While answering comments on TikTok, David Archuleta may have let slip his bedroom preferences…

“I was going to say, being a bottom is a full-time job…” said the commenter, with Archuleta responding, “…can’t relate.”

And I oop!

Bob the Drag Queen (top)

On his YouTube account, Bob The Drag Queen spilt all when answering his fans’ most googled questions about him.

“Why are so many people googling that?” said the Drag Race champion, before answering, “I’m a top”.

I mean, Bob gives top energy, no?

Daniel Newman (top)

Daniel Newman’s very frank and honest explanation for where he stands in the bedroom department…

“I’m a TOP. I’m too lazy to bottom!” the star of The Walking Dead wrote on Twitter (ahem, X).

Fair enough!

Ross Mathews (top)

Way back in 2013, Ross Mathews revealed how he likes to get down in the bedroom to host of SiriusXM, Howard Stern.

“Not like a… I don’t, like, ‘give it’. I’m not like, ‘Come here, I gotta give it to ya,'” giggled Mathews.

Oh, hey there femme-top!

Jerrod Carmichael (top)

Jerrod Carmichael let us know he was a lifelong top in OUT Magazine‘s 100 issue… but did he also cop to being open to switch things up?

We’ll let you decide…

Nico Tortorella (vers top)

While Nico Tortorella prefers to top, they’ve been open about their fluidity, depending on the person, the vibe and place. They’ve also been very vocal about breaking stigma around bottoming or being in a receiving position, saying there’s “nothing more masculine than bottoming.”

Abso-fucking-lutley!

Joel Kim Booster (vers)

For Joel Kim Booster, the vibe is everything. From the time of day, the clothes he wears to the person he’s with, this vers likes to explore the role of femme and masculine roles, telling OUT Magazine that if he wears “leather if I’m topping, lace if I’m bottoming.” And when asked about time of day, “morning if I’m topping, night if I’m bottoming.”

So there you have it!

Troye Sivan (vers)

It’s so good, it’s so good… that Troye Sivan has opened up more about his sexuality.

Sivan told Emily Ratajkowski on her High Low podcast that his song ‘Bloom’, about bottoming, had made his fans assume that’s what he was all about. “People took that and ran,” he said.

But he told Ratajkowski that he was “not a bottom”, so glad we’ve cleared that up. Kind of.

The pup scene is growing in popularity, thanks to online communities. Here’s what they wish you understood about pup life.

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

Until recently, the pup scene has been a fairly underground sect of BDSM culture. Though you may recognise the leather dog masks that are emblematic of the scene at Pride or in your local sex shop. Wherever you might have encountered pups and their handlers, we’re here to unpick the inner workings of the misunderstood dynamic.

What is power play? And how does it relate to the pup scene?

Power play is a term used in adult BDSM play, where one person’s role is to be submissive and the other person is dominant,” explains Miss May, a professional dominatrix and host of E1 Darkroom. “We play and indulge in power imbalance. A lot of people find solitude in giving up control or gaining control.”

Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, Masochism, more commonly known as BDSM, is a collective name for sexual practices that explore power dynamics, pain, pleasure and restriction in consensual pre-agreed scenarios.

Power dynamics exist in every relationship we have, be it between your work colleagues, friends and family members. In many of these instances, the authoritative role and submissive roles are predetermined through social norms and hierarchies and are often unyielding and unchangeable. We often find ourselves slotted into these social experiences in a non-consenting manner. They’re predetermined, but not of our own making.

BDSM offers another way to explore power dynamics where consent and self-determination play a pivotal role in the experience. Exploring these same power dynamics in the context of sex can offer us room to play out fantasies, subvert negative experiences, or even to regain and lose control in situations where you ordinarily might not. Some find BDSM practices a good arena to explore past traumas and process emotions, too, and can be extraordinarily profound.

When done right, BDSM can be a healing, empowering and gratifying experience. However, there are a few misconceptions about BDSM more generally that can make it feel shameful, exploitative and unsafe.

Some might wrongly assume that submissive preferences mean losing control, when in fact, submissive partners often set the pace. Others might believe that being dominant is about inflicting pain and punishment, when it can also be a tender understanding of a person’s limits and desires. Whatever you’ve heard or gleaned from fictional representations of it in popular culture *cough* Fifty Shades of Grey *cough*, the reality is very different.

First things first, any form of BDSM requires a whole lot of communication and trust. There’s a period of negotiation to establish boundaries between the dom and the sub. The play is built on continuous, enthusiastic consent, which can be revoked at any point. Afterwards, there’s aftercare in the form of cuddles, chats, snoozes – whatever you might need. What’s important to remember is that BDSM isn’t defined by a single sex act alone, but the 360-degree exploration of intimacy.

It’s worth bearing this in mind with pup play, that like broader BDSM practices that find their way into the mainstream without context or community guidance, it can easily be misconstrued as absurd or devious.

What is pup play?

One thing pups want everyone to know is that the scene is ever-evolving, diverse and couldn’t be more removed from ideas of bestiality.

Pup play can provide a safe arena for sexual exploration. But these roles can be platonic in nature too, focused on community bonding, playing and socialising.

Depending on the needs or desires of that person, they may take on the role of a ‘puppy’ or a ‘handler’. Handlers tend to take ‘ownership’ of pups by collaring them, or the two can exist as solitary members of a pack.

The practice of pup play can be dated back hundreds of years, though it has gained recent popularity in more mainstream spaces thanks to the internet and a general movement towards social acceptance of fringe sex and relationship practices.

According to Pup Play 101, a community resource website helping to destigmatise and demystify pup play, a pup might identify with the label ‘Dog’, ‘Alpha’, ‘Omega’, ‘Pupper’ or any number of other canine related names, whereas a handler might be known as ‘Sir’, ‘Madam’, ‘Mister’ or ‘Ms’, for example.

Pups may wear leather masks, called ‘pup hoods’, collars and other canine-related gear, though this isn’t a necessary part of pup play. They might play, or ‘mosh’, together with squeaky toys and bones. But it’s important to remember that a pup can still explore their pup-ness without all these things. Though they can bring on a sense of ease and help enter what is called the ‘headspace’.

Pup Stretch, who wishes to be known by their pup persona, explains that a headspace, for them, can be entered pretty easily. “If somebody calls me a good boy, it instantly melts me. It makes me happy. It makes me want to wag and roll over for belly rubs, as silly as that sounds…” he pauses, before explaining, “but it shifts your mind from everything that is in your normal world to a much simpler, much easier, more stress-free, no worry headspace.”

Stretch explains that this state of mind is a form of escapism that can be triggered by uttering just a couple of keywords. “For others, it might take longer,” he says, adding, “it’s an escape.”

@tonybearaloney_live I definitely get what they mean! he made me feel so special and it was like my heart melted for him all over again. ❤️ #pupplay #pupplaycommunity #pup #lgbt #lgbtspaces #relationships #couples ♬ original sound – TonyBearaloney

This is something that TikTok user @TonyBearaloney documents. He excitedly speaks to camera, explaining that he finally understands the “warm tingly feeling inside when you truly get to do what you want to do” that he’d read so much about.

“My heart exploded”, he recounts after being told he was a “really cute, good boy.”

“I literally felt so much love and warmth inside,” he says.

When it comes to pup play, there are many crossovers with BDSM principles; however, unlike BDSM, pup play isn’t inherently sexual. Pup play can also be about garnering platonic affection and intimacy. Additionally, some might choose to use ‘pup-sonas’ to explore personality characteristics they otherwise may not have.

“People like to get into any type of BDSM, in my opinion, to escape. Dressing up and stripping off your humanity gives people a release. Putting on a mask, listening to orders. We get to turn our brains off,” Miss May explains.

This is echoed by one TikTok user, @PuppyJester, who expressed in a video dating back to 2023 that wearing pup hoods can be a calming experience.

@pupjester Replying to @lose your smile Shitbags hope this helps answer the question a little bit. #pupjester #jesterspuphouse #pupplaycommunity #pupplay #humanpup #wwpuppack ♬ The Champion – Lux-Inspira

“If I’m wearing one of my muzzles or wearing one of my hoods, at that point it helps with my social anxiety. It turns my brain off. I’m not having to think as much like a person.”

Like Jester, Oli_The_Pup_, who wishes to go by his TikTok handle, 25 from Southend on Sea, explains to Gay Times that being a pup helps him combat his social anxiety.

“As soon as I put that hood on, I feel like I can speak to anyone and do anything,” he says. “It makes me feel confident.”

What’s more, being in a pup-handler dynamic with his partner makes sexual exploration a freeing experience based in play. Recounting his recent play session with his handler, Oli_The_Pup expresses how these roles allow him to be social and have adult fun with other pups outside of their otherwise closed relationship.

Exploring the scene

Miss May advises taking your time and easing yourself into it. “Don’t treat people as kink dispensers,” she says, “Find your community, friends, lovers or play partners. If you’re too shy to play at events, you can book a dungeon or hotel too and play there with your play partner.”

There’s also the SFW route into pup play, if you’re looking to explore platonic connections.

“I personally attend Pup Out in London, which is a fun SFW pup event and pup space. It’s a great way of finding loads of other pups,” Oli_The_Pup_ says.

What’s the role of a handler?

In pup play, the handler’s role is similar to that of a caretaker. Someone who has authority over their pup, but ultimately wants them to be happy, obedient and loving while in a state of play.

Their role, similar to that of a dom, is one of servitude. Handler David writes on his website that, to him, being a handler means being a caretaker of a community, and not just of those they’ve collared – a term that describes the action of taking  ‘ownership’ of a pup.

“[sic] As members of the community who tend to not experience a headspace, Handlers are also the human companions to pets in the community,” he writes, going on to explain that handlers are also community leaders.

Handlers and pups share a special bond.

“The pup knows what’s expected of him before the handler would even ask; they can play and be silly and have a good time and not worry about anything,” Stretch explains.

What kind of pup can a person be?

There are limited central resources that fully explain what a pup is or how one can express oneself as a pup. However, this blog entry from 2020 does a pretty good job.

How do I find my pup-eople?

The internet community of pups and handlers is an open and friendly one. There are also a multitude of resources around language, expectation and play possibilities.

“Educate yourself about the kink and the intention behind why you want to explore it,” Miss May suggests. “Don’t take yourself too seriously and have fun!”

I ask Stretch what advice they have to share about their journey that could help other pups just starting out on theirs. “Don’t give up and keep following your arrow,” he says.

“It took me from 2018 till just now at the beginning of 2025 to find a group of pups in my area, and the amount of happiness and comfort and calmness that they have brought into my world is life-changing.”

I can see the emotion in Stretch’s eyes as they express how much these friendships have enriched their lives. “My wish for everybody that’s thinking about it or into it, don’t be discouraged. Someday, hopefully, they can all find that happiness, because it’s out there.”

Meet the kink that subverts in sportswear, and where you can explore it further.

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

Sportswear encompasses several different areas of kink and fetish. From the subversion of scally lads’ very specific displays of masculinity and the happy hardcore club scene, to the smell of a sweaty jockstrap and ripe gym rooms, this visceral, multifaceted eroticism is far-reaching, deeply personal and maybe even a little misunderstood.

Here, we uncover the myriad ways sportswear has made it into our wildest fantasies, from being trampled by a Nike Air-wearing youth to fucking in trackie bottoms.

Why is sportswear such a turn-on?

“I think sportswear kinks are something which exists within quite interesting social codes of gender and class,” says Anastasiia Fedorova, writer, curator and researcher based in London.

Fedorova is fresh from the book launch for her debut non-fiction, Second Skin: Inside the Worlds of Fetish, Kink and Deviant Desire, when we speak. She explains that sportswear kinks are broadly linked to the fetishisation of working class stereotypes that can be a turn on of themselves, or because of their link to memory.

“These experiences tend to be quite universal, as these cultural stereotypes are really widespread,” she tells Gay Times. “I think sportswear, just naturally, is very connected to a particular expression and perception of masculinity, which might be quite ‘traditional'”.

She explains that these visual codes and signifiers can also be connected to a perception of a kind of freedom and physical movement, as well as the idea of energy and strength and dominance.

Sports are typically considered to be a competitive show of strength, stamina and skill, all traits that have been aligned with masculinity since, well, forever. There’s physical exertion, sweat, passion, aggression and determination woven into the fabric of sportswear’s very identity. So it’s perhaps no wonder, then, that these clothes have been adopted as fashion and identity statements outside of the sporting profession.

What clothes signify to many is culture, personhood and experience – all the makings of identity. This is compounded further by the fact that our senses are visceral and textured – particularly smell, which can send our brains down memory lane at the drop of a hat. Combined, it’s no wonder that eras that are painted by subcultures like rave music, working class lads of Britain, WWE or professional wrestling, football, etc., are emblematic of people’s sexual vices.

“When we talk about trainers and sportswear,” Fedrova begins, “I think it’s a very interesting intersection of commodity fetishism and sexual fetishism.”

Fedrova points out the convergence between the two and how our cultural identity is often linked with our sexual identity. In her book, Fedrova explores this relationship within the context of sneakers, or trainers.

“There are a lot of preconceptions surrounding which type of person would be into this. About how it is a predominantly gay male thing. But while writing the book, I discovered that this is also quite common among women and also for people across the gender spectrum.”

The different kinds of sportswear kinks

As the spectrum for sportswear is broad, there are numerous nuances and particularities to explore. Here is our list of the different kinds of sportswear kinks and their definitions.

Scally Lads

Think trainers, trackies tucked in socks, popped collars and hoodies. The scally lad encompasses working class male behaviours with overt visual displays. They’re extreme in their visual coding.

Lycra and Spandex

Harking back to the 80s, Lycra and Spandex sportswear clothing remains a common material for wrestling uniforms, cycling gear and more. For some, it might be the touch and feel of the material that makes for a fun experience, or the smell post-workout. It could be the pure, unadulterated and exposed nature of the skin-tight fit.

Nylon

Similar to the above, Nylon’s textural qualities imbue a sense of eroticism. They may come in the style of sportswear shorts for football or rugby, for example, tops or even tracksuits associated with working-class men.

How can I explore the sportswear kink further?

Fedrova suggests digging deep into what you find arousing about sportswear items.

“Ask yourself, ‘Why is this happening?'” she says, “I think the only way to understand that you develop a kink is the fact that you find something hot and arousing, sometimes even without understanding that.”

You can, of course, always visit specialist nights such as Fetish Week, where sportswear, amongst other dress codes, is encouraged. There are sportswear-specific nights that celebrate this eroticism, too. Take Jock Party, for example, or Gear Bound London. There’s Fet Club in Bristol, a men-only event.

For the sapphics, GNCs and wuh-luh-wuh’s, there are plenty of spaces beginning to challenge the gendered notions surrounding sportswear. Read our guide on the One Night sportswear event here if you like the sound of it.

There are also a number of OnlyFans accounts that specialise in making content specifically for this gaze.

Remember to proceed with consent top of mind, armed with the knowledge that only those who are actively participating in the kink with you are consenting to it.

Who knew these twinks would grow up to be so damn hunky?

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

At Gay Times, we don’t mourn twink death. We celebrate twink evolution!

Do you know your twinks from your twunks? Don’t worry, we’ve lovingly prepared this list that captures the transformation of twinks, i.e. gay or bisexual men who may or may not drink from the fountain of youth to maintain their boy-ish good looks, to twunks, i.e. twinks that become kind of hunky, with facial hair and muscle definition.

Here are the nine bi and gay male celebs that caught our eye and subsequently stole our hearts. With that said, bring on the twunks!

Kit Connor

You may know him as the love interest Nick Nelson from Heartstopper, starring alongside fellow twink heartthrob and friend, Joe Locke.

Connor has become unmistakably hench recently, though, if the photos of him in the upcoming A24 film Warfare are anything to go by – earning him true twunk status.

Keiynan Lonsdale

Lonsdale is pegged as one of IMDB’s LGBTQIA+ Hollywood stars to watch, and it’s easy to see why. Lonsdale’s standout performance in Amazon’s LGBTQIA+ show My Fake Boyfriend as Andrew is one for the books, and coincidentally, where we feel Lonsdale hit true twunk status.

Actor, dancer, singer-songwriter – twunk! Is there anything that Lonsdale can’t do?

Tom Daley

The crafty knitter, the Olympic athlete and diver extraordinaire has long held a special place in our hearts and minds.

But Daley’s physique sure has gone from twunk to mega-twunk lately. Look at those abs?!

Michael Cimino

Michawl Cimino’s recent transition from twink to twunk has had the internet well and truly gagged. For his new role in Motorhead, the beloved Love, Victor star has bulked up and hunked out.

Matt Bomer

From his piercing blue eyes to his rippling abs, Matt Bomer is the perfect example of someone who successfully navigated the twink to twunk pipeline. To top it all off, he’s a bloody good actor too, starring in White Collar, Fellow Travellers and The Normal Heart, to name a few.

Watch, oggle and appreciate him in his new role as Jerry Frank, in Mid-Century Modern on Hulu or Disney+.

David Archuleta

Is it the stubble? The tousled hair? Those popping shoulder muscles? We’re not sure, but what we do know is that the American Idol singer has made the leap, and we’re loving it.

This bisexual-babe-cum-demi-lover is soft in equal measure to feisty. Read more about his spicy sex life here

Chris Colfer

The sweet-smiling Chris Colfer of Glee fame has traversed the twink-to-twunk transformation rather beautifully, no?

There’s nothing we love more than a man with shoulders the size of boulders, and Colfer sure is packing those these days. What a transformation!

Ronen Rubinstein

Rubinstein has been bulking out, and damn, it looks good on him.

The 9-1-1 star, who recently came out as bisexual, is taking on the role of twunk. Complete with strong arms, a little facial stubble and, have mercy on us, that jawline.

Nicholas Galitzine

And, taking the honourable mentions award is the one and only Nicholas Galitzine.

While Galitzine identifies as a straight man, his contribution to gay cinema can’t be overlooked. Especially when you take into account that his upcoming role as He-Man in He-Man Masters of the Universe has inspired a bulk out so extreme that the internet has been left “shaking”

There’s no such thing as safe sex, but sex can always be safer. Here, we shed light on how to navigate the dimly lit world of anonymous group sex, its history and how to know when you’re ready to get involved.

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

Okay, curious minds, it’s time to demystify the backroom, otherwise known as a blackroom, darkroom or playroom. Maybe you’ve spotted one on a night out and felt compelled to explore, but couldn’t quite bring yourself to do it. Perhaps you’ve been fantasising about anonymous group sex, but are feeling a little shy about making the next step. Or, maybe you’re raring to go and need a couple of pointers.

Whatever the case, we’ve got your back.

These sexy sensory rooms can be an intense exploration of intimate touching, skin-on-skin contact and unrivalled pleasure. Still, they can also be overwhelming if you’re not clued in on what to expect, how to read (often) non-verbal consent cues or how to express disinterest in someone’s advances.

Here, we bring together advice and experiences from the community along with guidance from experts to help you have the best possible time if you decide to explore these spaces for yourself. But before we hit you with a dos and don’ts list, let’s first give you the lowdown on what to expect so that you can enter these spaces fully aware of the body language and etiquette that make spaces like these so much fun.

What is the backroom?

The backroom is a dimly lit space found in gay clubs (though not exclusively) where people engage in group sex and anonymous sex. No two are the same, and each one will have its own unique layout and vibe, depending on the scene that’s taking place.

You might find glory holes, suckatoriums and tucked away spots for more close-up encounters.

The purpose of these rooms is to create a space for pleasure and anonymity. Despite this, it isn’t a free-for-all where anything goes. Yhere are rules, discretion and a non-verbal code of conduct to adhere to. This can add to the thrill of cruising, but it can also add a layer of complexity for newbies.

Molly Houses, backrooms and the obscured history of homosexual desire and intimacy

Backrooms, like saunas, have existed for hundreds of years. In the UK, backrooms were historically known as ‘Molly Houses’, a brick and mortar meeting spot for men looking to have sex with other men, and can be traced back as early as the 17th century. However, it’s almost impossible to pin down where, exactly, they began.

You have to remember, these spaces were deliberately obscured; they were never meant to be discovered–unless you were in the know.” Says Dr Anthony Delaney, author of Queer Georgians: A Hidden History of Lovers, Lawbreakers and Homemakers, and presenter of dark history podcast After Dark on the History Hit network, tells Gay Times.

“Essentially what I have concluded after years of thralling through the pre-modern queer archive is that as long as what we would term queer people have existed so too has this type of meeting spot in one form or another,” he says.

Dr Delaney explains that, not unlike today, these were the main spaces where men who wished to meet other men came together to build community, foster intimacy, play with gender norms and have sex. However, unlike today (in the West at least), men who frequented these spaces put themselves in extraordinary danger.

“Access was often granted by a patron who was already familiar with the house,” explains Dr Delaney, “because you have to remember, attendance at one of these spaces in the 18th century was quite literally a life and death exchange.”

This was thanks to The Buggery Act of 1533, one of Henry VIII’s long lasting pieces of harmful and discriminatory legislation (it wasn’t repealed until hundreds of years later in 1828, and even then… things only improved marginally). Dr Delaney points out that, because of this legislation, if it could be proven that penetration between an ‘agent’ (a top) or a ‘pathick’ (a bottom) had occurred, then the ‘guilty’ parties could be hanged.

“The molly house itself was not the same thing as what we would understand as a backroom today,” Dr Delaney clarifies, explaining that while some things have stayed the same, other aspects are fundamentally different.

“The molly house was more akin to a proto-gay bar. But within these taverns there were rooms into which men would go together and, as one journalist observed in 1709, ‘enter upon their Beastly Obscenities, and to take those infamous Liberties with one another, that no Man, who is not sunk into a state of Devlisim, can think on without Blushing…'” He recites, “I’ll leave the finer details of what those ‘Beastly Obscenities’ might have entailed to your imagination….”

How do I know if I’m ready for backrooms?

Group sex, particularly anonymous group sex, is thrilling, risky and a little dangerous. That is partly why so many people love to do it.

Genevieve Collister Brown, Psychosexual Relationship Therapist, explains that there is so much to enjoy and be excited about. That being said, there are some questions you can ask yourself before jumping in headfirst to make sure you’re ready for the all-consuming experience of the backroom.

Questions to ask yourself:

Brown, who specialises in gender, sex and relationship diversity, suggests the following:

  • Mentally, are you feeling secure and grounded? These interactions can be overwhelming, you could get rejected lots and feel low or lonely.
  • Are you comfortable with it going many different ways? They’re unpredictable, it could be surprising, super hot or anticlimactic.
  • Have you thought about your wants and limits? Do you feel able to stick to these?
  • Do you understand the risks of STIs? Are you prepared and have what you need?
  • Do you understand the emotional highs and lows that can come with play like this? What might you need after, and how can you give this to yourself?

“If hooking up with strangers is appealing, if you feel able to communicate in this kind of way and this kind of space, if you’re excited by the prospect and open to the wide range of possibilities, then maybe you want to try it out,” says Brown.

“Take it at your own pace, you don’t have to be fearless, just be in touch with yourself and enjoy exploring!”

What to expect when you enter the backroom for the first time: The dos and the don’ts

“It’s dark in a darkroom!” says Brown, “I know that sounds obvious, but it’s worth mentioning, you might feel disoriented when entering, so find a spot where there’s a bit of light to get your bearings.”

Brown explains that darkrooms can feel overwhelming to navigate, especially if you haven’t got the etiquette down. They explain that the whole point of these spaces is that they’re private, “so don’t take photos or use your phone,” they advise, before continuing, “Don’t out anyone or talk about people you’ve seen or interacted with once you’ve left.”

How you move in these spaces has an impact on everyone’s experience. “It’s fine to stand on the edge and watch for a little bit,”  Brown says, “but be mindful that staring without giving any cues that you want to engage can be unnerving.”

Body language is one of the most important elements of backroom etiquette. So knowing how to read it, speak it and respect it goes a long way in making sure you and the others you’re with enjoy their experience.

In short, knowing how to read and express non-verbal consent cues is crucial.

How to revoke consent and say no without speaking.

“Even though darkrooms are mostly non-verbal spaces, consent can still be revoked at any time,” Brown states.

So, whether you’re in the thick of things, switching up positions or suddenly feeling like you’d like to stop. It’s your right to express how far you’d like to go, when you’d like to go there, and perhaps most importantly, to change your mind even if what you’re doing is exactly what you’d originally consented to.

If you want to express your disinterest, Brown suggests shaking your head, physically pushing advances away in a non-confrontational manner, or moving to another location. And, if you still feel unheard, don’t be frightened of saying “no” out loud if you’re not interested.

Equally, if someone moves away from you without explanation, take it as a “no” too.

How to check in and make sure you’re still having a good time

It’s easy to get swept up in the thick of it, but it’s important to keep tabs on how you’re feeling.

“People can join or leave, and with that, the energy can quickly shift and play can become more intense or rough,” Brown explains. “Sensory wise, they’re dark, music can be loud, it’s so easy to start off feeling excited and then suddenly feel disconnected or overwhelmed.”

If this starts to happen, they suggest checking your body for signs you’re still engaged.

“Are you breathing steadily or holding your breath? Are you feeling present or spacey? Is your body warm and open, or tense or numb? Has your arousal dropped suddenly?” Brown asks.

If you ask these questions and realise that, actually, you’re done or have had enough, then don’t worry.

“The group will keep going, you’re not responsible for the vibe. It’s easy to get swept up in the pace and intensity, so permit yourself to slow down, take breaks and stop at any time,” advises Brown.

Community experiences

The Sexpert from New York City says that exploring the scene helped him to connect to aspects of himself.

“I felt like something finally clicked,” he tells Gay Times, “I felt connected to the generations of fags who came before me, and finally understood their stories and their messages and their traumas and their pleasures in a deeper way than I ever realised was possible. “

In some ways, queerness is about being in the ‘backroom of society’, he reflects, explaining that it’s  “about finding ourselves in the margins, and embracing all the fraught and wonderful things that come with that.”

Parting advice

Remember, not all backrooms are male-only spaces. Depending on where you find yourself, you may find people of all genders and orientations.

Additionally, Brown stipulates just how important it is to be gentle with yourself and to have aftercare in place.

“Talk to people you trust about your thoughts or experiences (whilst maintaining anonymity) and trust your instincts about what feels good and right for you,” they say. Otherwise, have fun!

While a prepared routine is preferable, it’s not always realistic. Here’s your complete guide to douching on the go.

WORDS BY KATIE BASKERVILLE

Listen, when it comes to prepping for sex, it’s sods law that the one day you take a day off from being ready at a moment’s notice is the day you’re likely to have sex. Everyone’s been caught short. And, while having the time to prepare for sex of any kind is key to the enjoyment of it later (because sex starts where? In the brain!), life likes to surprise us with horny interludes and sexy opportunities we may not have seen coming.

However, the toxic culture surrounding entitlement and expectation bottoms experience leads unwarranted pressure, stress and general worry around not having the perfect bootyhole at all times, which, let’s face it, isn’t realistic. Bottom-shaming is never okay, and before we get into the how-tos, we wanted to reiterate that there is nothing wrong with enjoying bottoming. And that as a bottom, you are not sloppy or ‘dirty’ by default and certainly shouldn’t expect degradation from your partner – unless you want it, of course. But that’s a different article.

Do I have to douche to bottom?

Some bottoms love the peace of mind that douching can bring. Others like feeling empty, and the sense of readiness anal sex-prep brings them. But one thing is for sure: not everybody does it, and you certainly don’t have to if you don’t want to.

“In my practice, I hear that the pressure around douching comes from some tops and bottoms. But not all of them, because many gay men are very comfortable with having an open conversation about it rather than putting pressure,” advises Silva Neves, Accredited Psychosexual & Relationship psychotherapist.

That being said, Neves recognises that some tops can be quite strict in wanting the bottom to be perfect and clean, and would not tolerate any potential for mess. This, he explains, creates an inordinate amount of pressure for bottoms who may feel that potential for mess means that they’ve “failed as a bottom”.

“I think that overall, the issue around the pressures is shame and a discomfort in having honest conversations about anal sex.”

Should I douche for my partner?

So, if you don’t want to do it, you don’t have to. And it really is as simple as that. Yes, some might prefer it if you did, but you should never feel pressured into it if you’re not up for it.

Your partner, however fleeting, should be respectful of you, your body and should be seeking your enthusiastic consent throughout. A show of disgust if you have an accident (totally normal, by the way – it’s where poo comes from), or if you are met with childish attitudes about being the receiver, is a major red flag and, frankly, whiffs familiarly of a brand of misogyny all too present in the gay community. That has no place in the bedroom, whatever your gender. Considerate tops only, thanks.

Neves agrees and urges bottoms to choose their top sexual partner carefully. “Find one that is kind, happy to take things at the bottom’s pace, can tolerate the potential for mess, and respectful. Good sex is about the people involved co-creating a hot, sexy, sexual space between them, it is not just about the bottom having to be always ready,” he says.

Lifestyle changes that make douching on the go easier

Too many people don’t eat, or slam an Imodium or seven to slow things down. For the love of Madonna, please, do not — I repeat, do not do this. You and your digestive system should be well acquainted, yes. But not like that.

Instead of backing yourself up and making future you a constipated mess (they won’t thank you for it), why not try these suggestions instead?

Time your eating to pooping time

I’m deadly serious. Most people need to poop 15 to 90 minutes after eating, and it takes on average around 24 hours for the meal you’ve eaten to pass through to the colon. But – plot twist! – everybody is different, so you’ve got to get to know your version of what’s normal.

Good diet, happy gut

Staying regular and taking your fibre seriously means you’re less likely to disrupt your gut. And that means staying regular, alongside other amazing health benefits. Some people may choose to take supplements, while others might eat a bit more roughage. Whatever works best for you is what you’re able to do consistently.

When should I douche?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to this answer, and ultimately it comes down to your personal preferences. This means getting comfortable asking yourself a few questions, like: how much time do you like to have to prep? Do you mind douching just before a hook-up? Would you prefer not to think about it when you’re heading out?

You might prefer getting up and getting it out of the way, or you might douche before leaving to go out. You may even decide to douche a couple of hours before your date arrives. These are all perfectly fine things to do, so long as you know how to do them and are doing them safely.

Risks of douching on the go

“I’m sorry to say that I don’t think douching on the go should be an option to consider in the first place because it perpetuates the pressures on bottoms to be always clean and ready, and when it doesn’t happen, the belief of failure can set in and induce shame,” says Neves.

Neves explains that, instead of rushing things and risking physical and mental harm, try to consider the countless other sexual practices that are very pleasurable and that don’t involve penetrative intercourse.

“If there are good vibes with the sexual partner, they can decide to meet again for intercourse when the bottom can plan proper care for his rectum,” suggests Neves, who adds, “It is also important to acknowledge that a bottom can be as ready as it is humanly possible. It means that even with the best douching, mess can still be a possibility.”

Neves reminds Gay Times that it is of the utmost importance that sexual partners learn to accept potential mess as a reality and to relax around that possibility, rather than putting the pressure of having to be always clean and always ready.

On top of that, douching is risky business. Doing it too frequently, or to vigorously (we see you, shower attachments), can cause fissures, tears or worse, water intoxication, something you do not want to fuck with. If that’s made you nervous, don’t worry. We’ll get into the hows and whens later to make sure you’re doing it as safely as possible.

Lastly, douching can feel strange and uncomfortable, but it should never be painful. Taking a second to relax in your body and mind so that the process can go as smoothly and comfortably as possible really helps. Your sphincter doesn’t like to be stressed. It just puckers tighter and makes life harder. Hoo-saa, take deep breaths, meditate and prepare your mind and body before you do anything else.

To be perfectly honest with you, douching on the go is not recommended by anyone. Not even us. But we know that realistically it’s still going to happen. So, before we get into the harm reduction how-tos, get familiar with what you could be risking. That way, if you do decide to do it, you’re fully informed and can decide whether the pros outweigh the cons.

Polari Lab co-founders Dr Henry Blest and Anna Vybornova, who are on a mission to improve analrectal health and reduce the risks of douching, tell Gay Times that “there’s no such thing as a real douching on the go with the traditional method. You need time, a private bathroom, clean water, and a smooth nozzle.”

“Trying to rush that process in a club toilet or someone’s questionable Airbnb shower? That’s how you piss off your sphincter and make sex uncomfortable,” they say. “Remember, douching is a medical procedure.”

There are also risks concerning water cleanliness to take into consideration, especially if you’re abroad and the tap water isn’t drinkable.

“Actually, douching with unclean water is worse than drinking it, as the stomach acidic barrier has some level of protection, while the rectum does not,” Polari Labs co-founders warn.

Polari Labs’ new technology ‘The A-ball” isn’t out – yet – but you can join the waitlist, so until then, if you’re going to do it, here’s a harm reduction approach.

How do I douche on the go?

While some people prefer to use spenny shower attachments, others are happy with a cheap disposable douche or one you can pick up from any adult shop. However, if you’re surprised by a deliciously indecent proposal, then you’re gonna wanna look for an on-the-go best friend. The humble water bottle. But not just any water bottle, although props, that’s impressive.

You’re going to want to pick up a bottle with a nozzle, just watch out for any sharp edges or ridges. You can also get your hands on reusable nozzles that perfectly fit around most water bottle openings.

Before you get started, make sure you let the water heat up to room temperature. The rectum is sensitive to cramping, and cold water jets can cause severe pain. Less than ideal before your steamy encounter. And, under no circumstances, add any antibacterial cleaning gels, sprays, or bleach to your water. Not even mouthwash. Not unless you want a fast trip in the ambulance to A&E and to do yourself some long-lasting damage. Trust me when I tell you that you would rather shit on someone once than shit yourself for the rest of your life. Ain’t worth it, kiddo!

Once your water is lukewarm, find a place where you can ass-up to the sky comfortably (preferably) and insert the nozzle, gently, and squeeze small amounts of water into your rectum. Wait five minutes, let yourself empty and repeat once or twice until the water is clear or mostly clear. Try not to repeat this a million times, you’ll cause yourself an injury.

When you’re happy that there’s no smell or colour to the water, take an extra beat (Polari Labs advise about 15 mins or so) and wait for any residue to be released. There’s no need to rush. It’s way worse to put on your Sunday best only to soil yourself than to be ten minutes late.

If you’re finding yourself a little, err, tense, shall we say? And relaxation just isn’t happening, no matter how hard you rainbow rhythms, don’t panic. Add a small amount of lube to a finger or small toy and tease your anus a little. You’ll be opened up in no time.

Dispose of your water bottle and you’re done! Just remember to clean the reusable nozzle with soapy warm water before you pop that back in your purse next to your mints x
